Microsoft Becomes Linux Foundation Platinum Member. What Does This Mean for Small Business?

NOVEMBER 29, 2016

The Linux Foundation works with users, developers, and professionals to keep software and technology open source. Meaning, they believe in a world where software is free to use and build upon. As a collective, the Linux foundation brings us free operating systems, business software, and the rights to use them free of charge. All they want are more people to help them build technology and donations to keep it running.

That's pretty great right?

Microsoft as a Linux Foundation Platinum Member

Microsoft joins the ranks of other companies such as IBM, Intel, and Hewlett Packard, in supporting a future of community-built technology. Some sources say that they are now the top contributing donors to the foundation, which makes sense seeing Microsoft in the past couple years switching some of its platforms over to Linux based systems. Maybe you heard some people shouting on Facebook about the cross over of Linux into windows 10.  If you haven't, there are some helpful links at the bottom of the page, but if you have -then you know Microsoft is planning for a bright future.

What This Means for Small Business

For one thing, with a community behind big open-sourced projects, and platinum level donors, the Linux Foundation has proven that a free operating system can be more secure and robust than any of the other leading paid operating systems. Here is a case Study that lays out the underlining facts. I use CentOS personally when working on programming websites or configuring a secure network. Even my old, slow, and outdated computers are transformed into speed demons when Linux is installed, making old hardware new again. Sure, there is a slight learning curve, but using secure software is the most important factor when it comes to the future of any business. Especially this day and age.

What to Expect in The Near Future

We know that it takes a lot of time and passion to fuel a small business and the future of these type of projects only helps save you money. Linux has come a long way in terms of user-ability, and its still being updated and used in enterprise companies for a very good reason. The production and development of these systems has only been increasing in speed, and security. The future will bring us a world of more free, open source, software that anyone can use. My advice to you is -give Linux a try.

Try Linux

A good place to start, is finding someone who works with computers. Chances are they know a little about how to use Linux, and can teach you some basics.

If not, find or buy an old cheap computer that would normally run windows, and learn to install one of these two different Linux Distributions. Both have some of the best developers and software applications. Find out which one suits you the best.
